Galileo, born in Pisa in 1564 and died in Arcetri, near Florence, on January 8, 1642 (77 years old), was an Italian mathematician, surveyor, physicist and astronomer of the 17th century. Among his technical achievements, he perfected and exploited the astronomical telescope, perfecting the Dutch discovery of a telescope, to make rapid and early observations that turned the foundations of astronomy upside down. This man of science thus posed as a defender of the Copernican modeling approach to the Universe, proposing to adopt heliocentrism and satellite movements.
