Bertenun kain dipercayai telah wujud di Negara Brunei Darussalam seawal abad ke-sembilan Masihi. Ini berdasarkan bukti arkaeologi yang pernah dijumpai di Kota Batu yang menempatkan usia beberapa temuan barang-barang bertenun kain dari tahun 800 hingga 1850 yang lalu (Karim, 2002).
