Iniciado em 1982, como uma extensão do Seminário Presbiteriano do Sul (Campinas - SP), em 03 de outubro de 1986 foi organizado o Seminário Teológico Presbiteriano do Rio de Janeiro que, na Reunião Ordinária do Supremo Concílio da Igreja Presbiteriana do Brasil, realizada em julho de 2006, foi denominado de Seminário Teológico Presbiteriano Rev. Ashbel Green Simonton, em homenagem ao pastor missionário fundador da denominação no Brasil.

O Seminário é uma instituição cristã de ensino teológico e confissão de fé reformada, jurisdicionada à Igreja Presbiteriana do Brasil que objetiva ser uma referência para o Presbiterianismo, oferecer sólido conhecimento bíblico-teológico, formando pastores que suprirão o sagrado ministério na IPB e, ainda, possibilitando aos estudantes, homens e mulheres, uma vivência cristã consciente e amadurecida.
