Home » Innovations » Sporty Smartwatches At A Budget Price: These Models Work Without A Mobile Phone
A smartwatch is usually nothing more than an extended arm of your smartphone. With its own SIM, however, the watch becomes completely autonomous and offers unimagined freedom - especially for fitness fans. We'll show you four sporty LTE models for less than 400 euros.
Smart fitness watches for young and old
The smartphone has been with us every step of the way for over a decade. We even involuntarily take it with us to exercise. After all, you don't want to miss anything and the workout is only half as fun without music. But especially when jogging or cycling, the cell phone can press uncomfortably in the pants and restrict freedom of movement. An arm pocket promises a remedy, but is impractical in the long run.
Certain fitness trackers and smartwatches at least allow music to be played without a mobile phone by loading them with your favorite songs in MP3 format or playlists from compatible streaming services in advance, but the full functionality is only provided by the smartphone. Anyone who wants to make additional phone calls, receive notifications and use online services while on the move, needs a model with an integrated LTE module and SIM card slot or eSIM.
We present four such wearables below . These are particularly sporty versions that have a silicone wristband , among other things , so that even sweaty training sessions are no problem and the watch sits tightly on the wrist. At Saturn you can get the internet-enabled smartwatches at a good price - the prices are between 150 and 380 euros.

Apple Watch SE Nike (GPS + Cellular)
The Apple Watch is undoubtedly one of the most popular smartwatches on the market and a first-class companion for the iPhone, as the devices work perfectly together. If you are looking for a cheap and sportier alternative to the Series 6 , you should definitely take a look at the Apple Watch SE in the Nike edition : It combines a tasteful, athletic design with practical functions and costs almost 200 euros less than the current top model - 349 euros . In addition to a GPS module, the smartwatch has an eSIM function on board, via which it connects directly to the Internet and acts completely independently on the go. So the iPhone can stay at home for the next run or a visit to the swimming pool. With a size of 40 millimeters, the case is not only pleasantly discreet, but also waterproof up to 50 meters deep. Thanks to the automatic measurement of the heart rate and warning in the event of irregularities, athletes do not have to worry about going over their limits during training. In addition, the barometric altimeter detects when you climb stairs.
The Apple Watch SE Nike is primarily operated via the touch-sensitive retina display, which, thanks to OLED technology, provides a colorful and high-contrast display. The dials are kept in the exclusive Nike design. The built-in battery has a runtime of up to 18 hours; charging is carried out inductively using the supplied magnetic cable. If you don't like the silver-black color scheme, you can also get the watch completely in black - or as a classic SE model in many other colors.
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 LTE
Android users do not have access to the Apple Watch, but there are a number of alternatives for them. The most obvious one is likely to be the Samsung Galaxy Watch , which, by the way, can handle Android AND iOS devices .
Here, too, the manufacturer provides the top model - the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 - with a sporty counterpart : the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 is much more casual and slimmer thanks to the frameless aluminum design and fluorine rubber strap . The same applies to the price: Saturn currently has the smart fitness watch on offer for only 168.56 euros .
The case is also 40 millimeters in size, but compared to the Apple Watch it is round instead of square . The Super AMOLED screen measures 1.2 inches diagonally. The smartwatch is operated either by touch , voice control or via the (world's first) digital bezel . This allows you to scroll through menu entries, function lists and texts by swiping your fingertip over the edge of the display. If you prefer an analog watch look, the dials can be changed at any time. In addition, the Galaxy Watch Active2 versatile fitness and wellness functions such as heart rate measurement or meditation programs.
Sweat or water does not affect the Samsung watch; it is protected up to 5 ATM and therefore also suitable for swimming . The maximum battery life is stated with a respectable 46 hours . The charging is also done wirelessly via the supplied inductive charging station. Saturn is currently offering the Galaxy Watch Active2 for just ten euros more as a 44-millimeter model , provided that the color "pink gold" is arranged.
Huawei Watch 2 4G
The Huawei Watch 2 looks a little rustic with its relatively wide numbered bezel, but it cuts a fine figure on the wrist, especially for strength and endurance training - as well as for all other activities. Speaking of endurance: the watch proves this in several ways. On the one hand, it has been on the market since 2017 (and therefore quite difficult to get), and on the other hand, the battery lasts up to 40 hours on one charge .
The price has also remained astonishingly stable over time. The Smartwatch at MediaMarkt still costs 379 euros, making it the most expensive in our overview. Saturn currently only has the newer Huawei Watch GT 2 without LTE function in its range. If you want to be available without a Bluetooth connection to your smartphone , you cannot ignore the MediaMarkt offer - provided, of course, that you insert an active nano SIM card into the corresponding slot.
Various apps can be installed thanks to the Google Play Store on the watch. Four GB of storage space are available internally for this. The 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen promises a clear and high-contrast display. Numerous functions can also be controlled by voice command via the Google Assistant.
Xplora X4
You can argue about a smartphone in children's hands and the right age to buy it. A cellular-compatible smartwatch should appear to many as a much cooler gadget, however, as you can use it to make calls in Knight Rider style. The Xplora X4 offers even more - and was specially developed for children. What the offspring does not need to know: All functions and settings are controlled by the parents via their own app, so that the offspring can find their way into the digital world step by step.
In view of the price of less than 150 euros at Saturn , the equipment is surprisingly lavish: In addition to telephony with up to 50 fixed contacts (the child can also make calls themselves), the watch offers a message function for displaying texts and emojis as well as a integrated camera . Although this only has a resolution of two megapixels, it is always sufficient to take pictures of special moments and let parents participate in the adventures.
The watch rewards physical activity with points for joining the #GOPLAY platform, so that movement is not neglected and the child may take part in one or the other lap. For every 1,000 steps, children receive one XCOIN, which they can exchange there during playtime, for example. Thanks to the waterproof housing (IPX8), the Xplora X4 is even suitable for swimming. To let the fun begin, all you have to do is insert a SIM card into the smartwatch.
